Complete your setup
A black silk carpet is the discipline test of any northern Indian weaving house. The colour holds across the entire field only if the dye chemistry, the silk grade, and the loom tension are all working at the upper limit of what the tradition can ask of them. Most workshops will not take the commission. The piece in front of you takes the panel format, breaks the field into related registers of flower vocabulary, and lets the black do the structural work while the floral incident in the central stripe and the borders carries the colour conversation. A diamond medallion sits at the heart with four palmettes set on its axes, and the wider central stripe runs three palmette shapes connected end to end.
Two weavers shared this loom across approximately five months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, the Persian asymmetric throw, knot density at the upper Indian end. The black ground came up across multiple short cycles. The floral vocabulary in the borders picks out in jewel-tone reds, indigos, and ochres against the dense field.
The composition
The black grounds the rug like a stage. Floral incident reads forward against it, and the central diamond medallion holds the eye at the heart of the page. Silk surface shifts between two values of black across the warp and weft directions, which gives the field a structural luminosity wool will never produce. The bud motifs in the inner and outer guards rhyme across the borders at quiet scale, and the central stripe runs the linked palmettes at a slow even pulse without becoming hypnotic.
What you are buying
Antique silk on black ground at this size carries international auction estimates of 15,000 to 30,000 dollars when comparable stock surfaces. New weavings in the same fibre and the same density carry Western dealer prices well above that. Silk on cotton in this format is among the very few decorative objects that appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The labour and the silk grade required to replace it only become more expensive as the years pass.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a reading nook, the foot of a queen bed, or a small sitting circle. Black ground holds against warm white plaster, lime-washed grey, or aged teak walls. Brass, red leather, and walnut case furniture pair with the silk. The rug expects to be the only patterned voice in its immediate field, so keep upholstery prints out of direct contact.
Conservation
Half turn every six months for even surface aging. Vacuum suction-only, beater bar off. Spills blotted at the second of contact with a dry cotton cloth and never rubbed. Specialist silk wash by a trained conservator at five to seven year intervals. The rug runs sixty years in active use and remains heritable.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
