Black grounds in silk weaving are exceptionally rare in the historical record because black is the hardest natural colour to hold even across a large knotted field. Most so-called black silk grounds in nineteenth-century Indian work are actually deep indigo overdyed with walnut hull, and even with that combined chemistry the surface tends to read brown under interior light. The runner in front of you holds the black with conviction. The panel format breaks the field into related registers of flower vocabulary, with a central stripe carrying linked palmettes in three shapes, a diamond medallion at the heart with four palmettes on its cardinal axes, and inner and outer guards rhyming bud motifs at quieter scale.

One weaver shared this loom for roughly four months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, the Persian asymmetric throw, knot density at the upper Indian range. The black field came up across multiple short dye cycles to keep the silk lustre intact under heavy pigment load. The flower work in the central stripe and the borders is picked out in jewel-tone reds, indigos, and ochres that sit forward against the ground.

The composition

The black does the foundation work. The flower vocabulary sits against it as figure on ground, and silk being silk, the field reads with depth that wool would never reach. From across a room the rug is a black panel with floral incident; close in, the colour incidents in the central stripe and the borders take definition and the diamond medallion comes forward in the field. Silk pile shifts the surface between two values of black depending on the angle of light.

What you are buying

Antique silk runners on black ground are the rarest tier of the format and rarely come to international auction. When they do, estimates range from 12,000 to 25,000 dollars. New weavings in the same fibre and the same density shelf at Western dealers at multiples of the maker's price. Silk on cotton in this format gains value across the decades, since the labour cost of replacing the rug increases as fewer master weavers train under the discipline.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) suits a Pooja room, an entrance foyer, the foot of a single bed, or the run between desk and window. Black field carries well against warm walls and pale wood floors. Brass and red leather pair with the silk. Direct sunlight is welcome. The pile takes UV without losing the depth of the black, which is unusual for any naturally dyed surface.

Conservation

Turn the rug end for end every six months. Vacuum on suction only, never beater bar. Blot any spill instantly with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub. Specialist silk hand-wash every five to seven years. The runner runs the life of its first owner with this care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
