New Zealand mulberry silk is the only fibre that takes natural dye to the saturation a classical Indian red needs without losing the directional sheen that makes the rug shift colour as you cross the room. The pure-silk Indian silk tradition was codified by Persian weavers who emigrated to the Mughal courts in the seventeenth century and was carried forward by Indian workshops who refined the single-knot technique to a level no other tradition has matched at scale. The five-by-eight format opens the medallion composition fully and gives the room a major focal field.
Two to three weavers worked the loom for close to thirteen months. Pure mulberry silk in both pile and foundation, the asymmetric Persian knot tied in the single-knot Indian technique against a vertical beam. The red was drawn from cochineal matured in copper vats; the silk was lowered into the bath twice and air-dried slowly between dips so the colour entered the fibre at depth. The ivory of the medallion uses undyed silk, which is the only way to keep the contrast permanent across decades of light exposure and use.
The composition
The red field carries a central medallion in concentric ivory, gold, and indigo, with four palmettes set on the cardinal axes and ivory arabesque vine threading the negative space. Border layers stack indigo guard bands either side of a cream main band of small repeating florals. The silk's sheen makes the red shift between warm crimson and deeper garnet by viewing angle, and the ivory medallion holds the room's quiet anchor regardless of light. The undyed ivory will warm to bone with the years; the red will deepen toward old garnet.
What you are buying
Antique Indian silks at five-by-eight in this red-ivory medallion pairing with intact condition reach $20,000 to $45,000 at specialist dealers when they surface. This is a contemporary weaving in the same Mughal-court lineage, on the same kind of silk-on-silk loom, at the same density of work. Thirteen months of two- to three-weaver labour and the cost of pure mulberry silk in both pile and foundation are underneath the price. Silk on silk appreciates with use; no other floor object has that property at this fibre at any price.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits as the focal field of a primary living area, anchors a primary bedroom carrying the bed at one end, or grounds a fireplace seating arrangement. The red ground reads against ivory and bone walls, settles deeper against muted teal or sage, and pairs with brass, dark walnut, and patinated bronze. Diffused light is preferred. Long direct sun stretches should be moderated to preserve the silk dye.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months so wear and light reach the field evenly. Suction-only vacuuming, monthly. Blot spills with white cotton immediately, never rub. Silk-specialist conservation cleaning every three to five years. Storage rolled face out, never folded. With this care the silk only improves across multiple decades and the rug outlives its first owner intact.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
