Complete your setup
Roughly two and a half million silk knots tied by hand. About twelve months of work for a small team. The Indian red-ivory medallion at five-by-seven is the format the senior workshops use to demonstrate what the tradition can do at room scale. The proportions allow the central medallion to breathe without crowding the border, and the field gets enough surface area for the arabesque vine work to count as composition rather than as filler. This is the canonical form.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for close to twelve months. Pure mulberry silk in both pile and foundation, the single-knot Indian asymmetric Persian knot tied against a vertical beam. The red ground was drawn from cochineal matured in copper vats over three weeks, with the silk dipped twice to drive the saturation into the fibre core. The medallion's ivory is undyed silk, which holds its tone permanently against the dyed red. Indigo and gold accents were prepared separately as skein-dyed silk before weaving began.
The composition
A red field carrying a central medallion in concentric ivory, gold, and indigo. Four palmettes mark the cardinal axes, with finely drawn ivory arabesque vine running the open space between them. Multi-layered borders stack indigo guard bands either side of a cream main band of small floral repeats. The silk sheen shifts the field by viewing angle from warm crimson to deeper garnet; the ivory medallion is the room's quiet anchor. Across years the red will deepen toward old wine and the ivory will warm to bone.
What you are buying
Antique Indian silks at five-by-seven in this colour pairing with intact condition reach $15,000 to $35,000 at specialist dealers when they surface. This is a contemporary weaving in the same Mughal lineage, on the same silk-on-silk loom and at the same density. Twelve months of two- to three-weaver work and the cost of pure mulberry silk for both pile and foundation are inside the price. Silk on silk appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the rug functions as a long-horizon asset rather than as a flooring purchase.
The piece in a room
5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) anchors a formal living area under a coffee table flanked by armchairs, grounds a primary bedroom carrying the bed at one end, or sits in a study with a chesterfield and reading chair. The red holds against ivory walls and settles deeper against muted sage or teal. Pair with brass, dark walnut, and patinated bronze. Long direct sun should be moderated to preserve the silk colour. Diffused light is preferred.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months so wear and light age the field evenly. Suction-only vacuuming, monthly, beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with white cotton, never rub. Silk-specialist conservation cleaning every three to five years. Storage rolled face out, never folded. With this care the silk improves across decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
