An ivory medallion against a red field is the most photographed pairing in the Indian silk catalogue. The reason is structural: the undyed ivory sits as a true neutral inside the warm red, and the eye reads the medallion as a window or aperture rather than as an applied motif. The composition predates most other Indian colour combinations and has remained in continuous production at the senior workshops for over three centuries. The piece in front of you carries that lineage forward at four-by-six.

Two weavers shared the loom for close to ten months. Pure mulberry silk pile, silk foundation, the single-knot Indian technique tying the asymmetric Persian knot row by row against a vertical beam. The red was drawn from cochineal matured in copper vats over three weeks. The medallion's ivory uses the silk's undyed natural colour, which means the contrast holds permanently rather than degrading at differential rates the way two dyed colours can. Border indigo and accent gold were prepared in separate vats and applied to skein-dyed silk before weaving.

The composition

A red field carrying a central medallion in concentric ivory, gold, and indigo. Four palmettes mark the cardinal axes, with ivory arabesque vine running the negative space. Border layers carry indigo guard bands either side of a cream main band of repeating small florals. The silk's directional sheen shifts the red between warm and cool tones across the day; the ivory medallion holds its quiet centre. Over years the undyed ivory will warm to bone, the red will deepen toward old garnet, and the rug will gain the soft surface patina that no synthetic fibre can fake.

What you are buying

Antique Indian silks at four-by-six in this red-ivory pairing with intact condition and comparable density list with specialist dealers in the $10,000 to $25,000 band. This is a current weaving in the same Mughal lineage, on the same silk-on-silk loom, at the same density of work. Ten months of two-weaver labour and the cost of pure mulberry silk in both pile and foundation are inside the price you see. Silk on silk appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the rug enters the room as a long-horizon object closer to inheritance than to flooring.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) anchors a guest bedroom at the foot of the bed, sits in a study under a writing desk, or works as a focal field in front of a fireplace. The red ground reads against ivory walls and against muted blue or sage, and pairs with brass, dark walnut, and patinated bronze. Diffused daylight is welcome. Long direct sun should be moderated to preserve the silk colour depth.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months. Monthly suction-only vacuuming, beater bar off. Blot spills with white cotton immediately, never rub. Silk-trained conservation cleaning every three to five years; never use a wool-only cleaner. Storage rolled face out, never folded. Cared for this way, the silk gains patina with use over multiple decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
