Pure silk takes pigment to a saturation that wool will not reach, which is why the high-knot ateliers of northern India have always used it for the brightest of the medallion plans. Orange laid against light blue is one of the most demanding palettes in the silk vocabulary, an opposition pair on the colour wheel that must be balanced by intensity rather than overlap. This carpet handles the problem the way the Mughal designers handled it five centuries ago, by giving the orange a smaller territory at the centre and letting the cooler blue take up most of the field. The composition holds its tension at every distance.
Two weavers worked for around seven months. The dye bath drew on madder, indigo, weld, and a saffron extract for the warmest tones; the indigo produced the open blue of the field and the madder built the saturated orange medallion. Each knot was tied by feel in mulberry silk on cotton, asymmetric Persian construction, the slow weave that allows a colour change to land inside a single millimetre. Silk holds a wider chromatic range than any natural fibre and reflects light in two registers, surface and depth.
The composition
A circular orange medallion at the centre of an open light-blue ground, four small concentric motifs spilling outward in cardinal directions. The border is built in a triple frame, the central band carrying small palmette repeats. The orange and blue stay in tension because each holds its own value rather than dissolving into the other. Over the years the indigo will shift slightly toward dusk and the madder will warm toward terracotta, settling the field into a single quieter conversation.
What you are buying
Equivalent silk carpets in this density and condition trade through Indian auction rooms between three and six lakh rupees, with antique attribution pushing the upper end. This is a contemporary weaving in the same lineage, made on the same kind of loom in the same fibre at the same density. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Silk pile compacts under footfall and grows in surface gloss rather than wearing thin.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) suits the foot of a bed, a child's bedroom (the colour scheme reads young without reading childish), or the focal floor of a small sitting room. The cool blue ground does not compete with art on the wall, so the carpet works under a single bold painting or a wall of books. White walls open the field. Pale plaster, walnut, brass, and bleached oak floors all sit naturally against this palette.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each season for even light exposure and traffic. Vacuum on suction only, never with a beater bar. Treat any spill by blotting straight down with a clean dry cotton cloth, never wiping. Have the carpet cleaned by a silk-trained conservator every three years. Under that regime the carpet runs sixty years and gathers lustre the whole time.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
