The blue-ground Indian medallion is one of those refinements you only see in workshops with the confidence to depart from the textbook. Standard Indian doctrine carries red as the field and reserves cooler colours for accent and border; this composition flips the weighting and the entire effect. The room cools and steadies, the medallion becomes a contemplative centre rather than a glowing focus, and the rug reads as a piece of restrained Mughal scholarship. The five-by-eight scale gives the design enough open field for the indigo to breathe properly.

Two to three weavers worked the loom for close to thirteen months. Pure mulberry silk pile and foundation, the single-knot Indian asymmetric Persian knot tied row by row against the vertical beam. The indigo was prepared in cold vats and the silk was lowered through successive baths over many days, since indigo on silk requires layered building rather than a single dip. Red was drawn from matured cochineal. The pile was sheared to a fine even height to keep the line work crisp at the medallion edges.

The composition

A deep indigo field carrying a central medallion in concentric red, ivory, and gold. Four palmettes mark the cardinal axes, and arabesque vine in ivory and red runs the negative space. Border layers carry cream guard bands flanking a red main band of small floral repeats. The silk sheen makes the field shift between midnight and twilight indigo by viewing angle; the medallion's red is the constant. Under warm lamplight the field deepens and the medallion glows. Under cool daylight the indigo presents at full saturation.

What you are buying

Antique Indian silks at five-by-eight with this blue-ground inversion in intact condition reach $20,000 to $45,000 with specialist dealers when they surface. This is a current weaving in the same Mughal-era lineage, on the same silk-on-silk loom and at the same density. Thirteen months of two- to three-weaver work plus pure mulberry silk for both pile and foundation are inside the price. Silk on silk appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which makes the rug a long-horizon object closer in financial behaviour to art than to flooring.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary living area under a four-seat coffee arrangement, grounds a primary bedroom at the foot of the bed, or sits in a formal study with a chesterfield and a single reading chair. The indigo reads against ivory walls and settles into walnut or pale oak floors. Pair with brass, dark wood, and patinated metal. Diffused light preferred; long direct sun should be moderated to preserve silk colour.

Conservation

Rotate every six months, half turn each time. Monthly suction-only vacuuming. Blot spills with clean white cotton, never rub. Silk-specialist conservation cleaning every three to five years; do not use wool-only cleaners. Storage rolled face out, never folded. With this care the patina only deepens across multiple decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
