Reverse the colour weighting of a classical Indian medallion and the design changes character entirely. With blue carried as the field and red reserved for the medallion centre and accents, the composition reads cooler, calmer, and less overtly devotional. This was a colour preference that emerged in the later Mughal courts as a refinement of the traditional vocabulary, and the Indian workshops have maintained it as a parallel line ever since. The piece in front of you sits in that lineage.

One weaver kept the loom for roughly eight months. Pure mulberry silk pile and silk foundation, the asymmetric Persian knot tied in the single-knot Indian technique against a vertical beam. Indigo for the field was prepared in deep cold vats and the silk was lowered over multiple successive baths to build the saturation in layers, since indigo on silk is a layered process rather than a single dip. The red of the medallion centre was drawn from cochineal, matured for weeks before the silk was committed to it.

The composition

A deep blue field carrying a central medallion in concentric red, ivory, and gold, with four palmettes marking the cardinal axes and arabesque vine work in ivory and red threading the negative space. Border layers carry cream guard bands either side of a main band in red. The silk reads as midnight indigo from one direction and as a softer, twilight blue from the other; the medallion's red catches the eye and pulls the composition together. Over years the indigo will deepen and the cream will warm, the way every silk Indian does.

What you are buying

Antique Indian silks of this colour inversion, with comparable knot density and intact condition, list with specialist dealers in the $5,000 to $15,000 band. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of silk-on-silk loom, at the same density. Eight months of single-weaver work and the cost of pure mulberry silk for both pile and foundation sit underneath the price. Silk on silk appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the rug is closer to a portable object of inheritance than to any conventional flooring purchase.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) sits at the foot of a writing desk, in a meditation alcove, beside a low chair as a focal point, or layered atop a larger neutral wool rug. The blue ground anchors a room with warm wood floors, brass detail, and ivory walls. Under low warm light the indigo deepens and the red medallion glows. Diffused daylight is welcome; long direct sun should be moderated to preserve the silk dye.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year. Suction-only monthly vacuuming. Blot spills with clean white cotton immediately, never rub. Silk-trained conservation cleaning every three to five years. Storage rolled face out, never folded. The silk will gain patina with use and the rug will outlast multiple generations of ownership.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
