The medallion format runs back through Persian and Indian carpet design to the manuscript binding work of fifteenth-century Timurid courts, where a central cartouche held the page and the surrounding field carried supporting incident. Northern Indian silk weavers absorbed the format through Mughal patronage in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and refined it into the version this rug carries: a central concentric medallion that holds the eye, palmettes set on the cardinal axes around it, and a field of supporting floral incident reaching to a measured border. The piece in front of you renders that grammar in beige and light brown, a tonal restraint that lets the medallion structure read as architecture rather than colour event.
Two weavers shared this loom across roughly six months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, every knot tied by feel with the Persian asymmetric throw, knot density at the upper Indian end. The dyes were brought up across multiple short cycles to preserve silk lustre. Beige holds the field. Light brown takes the medallion structure, the palmettes on the axes, and the supporting border vocabulary.
The composition
The two-tone palette reads as a single design decision carried through every register of the rug. Beige and light brown sit close enough on the spectrum that the surface does not divide visually into separate fields. Instead the medallion appears as relief on the same colour, the way light models form on a stone surface. Silk pile shifts both colours between two values along the warp and weft directions, so the same surface reads with subtle variation through the day.
What you are buying
Comparable silk medallion pieces at this size carry international auction estimates of 14,000 to 26,000 dollars when antique stock surfaces. New weavings in the same fibre and density shelve at Western dealers at multiples of the maker's price. Silk on cotton in this format gains value across the decades because the labour and the silk grade required to commission a replacement only become more difficult to source.
The piece in a room
5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) holds centre stage in a primary living room under a coffee table, anchors the foot of a king bed, or grounds a small dining circle for four. The beige and light brown palette pairs with cream, taupe, and pale stone walls. Walnut, oak, and brass take the rug well. The quiet colour scheme reads as a sophisticated counterpoint to bolder upholstery and art, and the rug becomes the calm foundation on which the rest of the room is composed.
Conservation
Half turn the rug each six-month interval. Vacuum suction-only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at the second of contact with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub the silk pile. Specialist hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years and remains a heritable object.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
