Rugsville Kashan Rust Gold Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

Rust and gold is the warm-light register of the Kashan vocabulary. Where rust and indigo holds a room cool and rust and black holds it formal, rust and gold reads as the autumn version of the lineage, with the principal red pulled toward terracotta and the secondary accent kept in old gold rather than the saturated mustard of cheaper weavings. The medallion sits inside a field of dense floral tracery, the way the central Persian designers had drawn it for four centuries.

Three to four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots one row at a time. The dye plants were madder root for the rust, weld and pomegranate layered for the old gold, walnut hull for the deeper outline, and a small amount of indigo for the deepest accent. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash to mellow the saturation into antique register.

The composition

A rust ground carrying a stepped gold medallion at the centre and four corresponding spandrel quarters at the corners. The field between is dense with floral tracery in cream, walnut, and pale indigo. The border is a triple band, the principal one in gold with a stylised vine repeat. Looked at from a doorway the rug reads as a single warm composition. From two metres the floral tracery resolves into individual rosettes and palmettes traveling on the diagonal.

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room. The warm palette pairs with terracotta plaster, walnut casework, brass detail, oxblood leather, and a single large painting in a saturated hue. South-light rooms warm the rust further. North-light rooms keep the gold cooler and let the medallion centre.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece crosses a century.
