The Kashan medallion is one of the oldest stable forms in the Persian repertoire. A diamond at the centre, four corner spandrels mirroring it, and a Shah Abbas field of paired arabesques running between. The form was set by the late sixteenth century court workshops and has remained legible at every scale since, from palace carpets the size of a banquet hall down to the prayer-mat format you are looking at here. The proportions are what carry the design at small scale. A weaver who shortens the medallion or thickens the border by even a few millimetres breaks the read.
This piece was hand-tufted in India by a single craftsman over about three weeks. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton primary one tuft at a time with a hand-held tufting tool, then locked at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim sealing the reverse. The pile was carved with hand shears so the ivory ground sits a millimetre above the red field, lifting the medallion forward.
The composition
Madder red ground, ivory medallion and corners, with indigo and soft green threading the floral repeats between. The red is the warm brick reading of the Kashan palette rather than the cooler crimson, which means the piece sits well against terracotta tile and against teak. The ivory is undyed wool and will warm into bone over the years rather than going grey.
The piece in a room
2' x 3' (61 x 91 cm) is the prayer-rug or accent scale. It works at the foot of a bed, beside a basin, in front of a chair where the feet land, or as the central piece of a small puja arrangement. The medallion gives the eye a focal point at this small format the way a single tile does in a floor laid with plain stone.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, then press dry with a second cloth. Do not soak. Some light shedding is normal for the first month as loose fibres clear; the body of the rug stays dense. Professional dry clean every three years keeps the colours true.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
