The Jwell tradition belongs to a family of soft-palette transitional designs that emerged from late-twentieth-century Indian workshop reworking of classical Persian motifs. The design takes the all-over vine and palmette repeat of the early Tabriz commercial weavings, opens up the spacing in the manner of a Ziegler, and resolves the palette into a closely keyed range of warm naturals so the pattern reads as ground rather than as figure. The result sits comfortably in a contemporary interior without breaking from the long lineage of Persian floral drawing.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet was woven in India by three weavers across roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied in the asymmetric Persian knot to a cotton warp at a density that supports the open vine drawing. The wool was vegetable dyed in walnut, oak gall, and a soft madder bath before knotting, with the principal vine drawing in tan over an ivory ground. The finished carpet was washed in mild plant soap, sun-cured, and hand-sheared to bring the drawing into clear relief against the field.

The composition

An ivory ground laid with a quiet, all-over scrolling vine in soft tan and warm walnut. The drawing repeats but the spacing is open, in the manner of the late-Ziegler workshops, so the eye reads the field as ground rather than as a packed pattern. The border is a single restrained guard band, in keeping with the Ziegler discipline that informs the design. The colour will lighten and warm over the next decade as light and use settle the dyes further.

What you are buying

Antique transitional carpets in nine-by-twelve format sell at international auction in the four to twenty thousand US dollar range, and the equivalent contemporary work appears at Western interior dealers between three and five thousand pounds. The construction here is identical, the dye process is identical, the pile material is identical. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, particularly as the soft palette deepens into the patina that distinguishes hand-knotted wool from any machine-made alternative.

The piece in a room

Nine by twelve in a warm tan-ivory palette is among the most useful formats in interior architecture. The carpet supports a wide range of upholstery without conflict, particularly cream linen, ochre velvet, oxblood leather, or charcoal wool. Sits cleanly under a long sectional sofa or under a six-to-ten seat dining table. Reads beautifully against pale plaster walls, raw oak floors, and brass lighting. Lets coloured artwork on the walls do the chromatic work.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years of useful life and outlives the first generation of owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
