Restraint is the hardest discipline in carpet design. A weaver can fill a field with ornament and trust that complexity will read as quality, but holding a composition to a single ground colour and a few drawn lines exposes every flaw in the fibre, every irregularity in the dye, every drift in the loom tension. The Laka design pushes that discipline. Ivory ground, sparse drawn lines, no border, no medallion. The piece must be perfect in fibre and tension or it cannot be perfect at all.

This 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two weavers over four and a half months. The pile is hand-spun wool blended with bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Tibetan senna loop wrapped over an iron rod and cut close to bring the silk passages into reflective register. The wool was washed but not dyed; the silk was left in its natural state, the slight cream cast of bombyx silk providing the subtle tonal shift between drawn line and field.

The composition

An ivory field interrupted only by a small number of drawn lines in the slightly cooler ivory of undyed silk. The composition functions almost as a drawing on linen rather than as a textile pattern. The eye reads the field first, then registers the silk lines as it adjusts to the surface. The piece is built to age. Ivory wool deepens to antique cream over the years, the silk holds steady, and the contrast between line and ground sharpens slightly rather than dissolving.

What you are buying

Ivory wool-and-silk Tibetan carpets in this fibre tier are uncommon and rarely come to market in India at this entry price. Western galleries sell comparable pieces between three and five lakh rupees once shipped. The senna construction, the silk content, and the careful undyed-fibre sourcing are identical to that supply. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small reading area, or sits as the floor element under a sculptural armchair in an entry. Ivory pairs with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and saturated upholstery in deep colour. The piece works particularly well in rooms with strong natural light, where the silk lines pick up afternoon sun and the wool warms in the late hours. Pairs poorly with cool grey or harsh fluorescent lighting; the fibre wants warmth around it.

Conservation

Rotate one hundred eighty degrees annually. Vacuum weekly using suction only with the beater bar lifted off the silk lines. Blot promptly when something spills; ivory wool shows colour quickly, and cleanup speed is the single biggest factor in long-term preservation. A wool-and-silk specialist hand-wash every five years protects the natural fibre cast. The piece runs fifty to seventy years with this care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
