A dhurrie is a flatweave woven on a horizontal pit loom in India. The construction has not changed materially in two hundred years and continues to be the most honest way to put wool or jute on a floor. The fibre is hand-spun, the dyes are batched in small lots, and the weaver beats every row down with a wooden comb before moving on.
The piece was woven by hand on a horizontal pit loom in India over two to three weeks. The fibre is jute spun into a heavy yarn, dyed in small batches and woven weft-faced so the pattern reads cleanly on both sides of the rug. Jute carries a natural sheen that softens with use rather than dulling, and the texture is dry and slightly coarse to the bare foot in a way that suits hot climates.
The composition
A multi palette held inside a flat geometric grid. Hand-spinning gives each thread a slight variation in diameter; hand-dyeing gives each batch a slight variation in tone. The rug is alive on the floor in a way no industrial flatweave manages. The construction also means the rug can be washed, beaten, and aired more aggressively than a knotted carpet, which is why the kilim survived as a working household object for so long.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) is the accent scale: under a coffee table, in a foyer, at the foot of a bed. Use it where the floor needs a single considered note rather than a full carpeted ground. Reads strongly against pale walls and tempers under a dark ceiling. The multi register pairs with brushed brass, oxidised steel, and the warmer end of contemporary timber finishes without forcing a single design vocabulary on the room.
Care
Shake the rug out monthly. Vacuum on a low setting, suction only, no brush bar. Spot-clean spills with cool water and a mild wool detergent. The flatweave will lay flatter over the first few weeks of use as the fibre relaxes into the room. Send for a professional hand wash every three to four years to keep the colour clean and the structure honest.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
