GRASSLOOP Sky Blue Modern Handmade Wool Carpet

Modern hand-tufted design treats the rug as a painted ground. A reduced palette, a confident composition, a relief between figure and field cut into the pile by hand. The drawing in this carpet works in that vocabulary. The geometry holds at room scale and reveals on close inspection.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over 4 to 6 weeks by 2 tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and then trimmed by hand with long shears. The relief cut between figure and field is what makes the pattern read at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The cartoon was drawn at full size before any wool was loaded, and the colour was selected from yarn skeins matched against the original studio drawing under daylight.

The composition

The palette is built around blue and sky blue, with the supporting tones set up to give the dominant colour somewhere to sit. The wool takes the dye to a saturation that holds at room scale and reads from across the floor. The relief cut between figure and ground was finished by hand at the end of the tufting, which gives the drawing the small, deliberate shadow that lets the eye read the composition cleanly. The pile is dense enough to register weight, and the surface returns light the way only animal fibre does.

Size as listed in the product specs. The piece sits well at the centre of a drawing room, with the seating pulled into a single conversation cluster on the field. The drawing extends past the seating on every side so the composition reads as a complete work. The blue and sky blue field works against walnut and oak floors, with linen and leather upholstery, and with both painted and limewashed walls.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile, after which the body of the rug stays dense and stable. Professional dry clean every two to three years to restore the lift of the wool.
