Sari silk weaving is one of the few genuinely twenty-first-century rug traditions. The fibre comes from vintage saris and silk garment waste collected from textile recycling networks across India, unraveled by hand, re-spun into weavable yarn, and then knotted into rugs that carry the colour memory of their previous lives. The ikat field in this piece references the resist-dye textiles of Andhra and Gujarat, where bound warps create the soft-edged geometric patterns that look like coloured ink dropped onto wet paper. The result is recycled material put through a craft tradition older than the loom it sits on.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for around three and a half months. The pile is recycled sari silk, hand-spun in irregular thicknesses that give the rug its characteristic shimmer and abrash. Knots are tied at a working density appropriate to the variable yarn weight, with the silk lustre standing in for the regularity a wool weave would carry. The foundation is cotton, drawn tight enough to hold the silk pile against use without flattening the natural sheen.

The composition

The ikat field reads as soft vertical bands of colour bleeding into one another. Pinks, blues, greens, oranges, and ivory pass through the rug in a controlled disorder. Silk catches and releases light differently from wool, so the colour saturation shifts as the viewer moves around the rug. The composition is bold but not aggressive; the soft-edged ikat geometry keeps the eye moving rather than fixing it.

What you are buying

Recycled sari silk rugs at this scale and density from named Western retailers list at the equivalent of one to two lakh, on the strength of the fibre story and the labour involved. The construction here matches that standard. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, in part because the recycled silk story is now embedded in a finished textile and in part because hand-knotted silk gathers patina rather than wear.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is a working scale for a bedside placement, the foot of a bed, a child's room, or a study under a single chair. The multi-coloured ikat reads as a focal piece against neutral walls and quiet upholstery. It pairs especially well with limewashed plaster, raw oak, and unbleached linen, where the silk is allowed to do all the colour work.

Conservation

Silk is more fragile than wool. Vacuum on suction only, never with a rotary brush, and ideally through a fine mesh screen. Blot spills immediately with a dry clean cotton cloth, never rub. A silk-trained specialist should clean the rug every four to five years; do not attempt home wet cleaning on silk pile.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
