The composition is built around the ikat resist-dye logic. The yarn is dyed in pattern before it ever reaches the loom, the pattern's edges blurred by the resistance of the binding, and when the warp is finally strung the design appears as a kind of softened drawing. Sari silk takes the resist beautifully because the fibre is smoother than wool and holds the dye in cleaner sequences. The ikat tradition runs from Uzbek velvets through Indonesian textiles to the contemporary Indian floor; this rug sits in that conversation.

Two weavers worked this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) ivory carpet over roughly four months. Sari silk is reclaimed from saris cut down to yarn, then hand-knotted on a cotton foundation. The fibre carries the original pigments of the saris in tiny irregular flecks, which is why no two ikat sari silk pieces are identical even when worked from the same cartoon. The pattern was drawn at scale on graph paper before knotting began.

The composition

A soft ivory field with the ikat pattern emerging in muted graphite, walnut, and faded gold along the long axis. The edges of every motif blur, the way they would in a dyed yarn, which gives the rug a painted rather than woven character. The silk surface catches direct light differently from every angle. Walked past at three o'clock the rug reads warm; at six it reads cool. The shimmer is part of the design.

What you are buying

Sari silk ikat rugs of this scale with comparable knot density sell at Western specialists between $4,500 and $8,500. The MSRP here is anchored against that benchmark. At the current price the rug sits well below auction comparables for handworked silk. Sari silk is a recycled fibre; each rug embeds a record of perhaps a hundred earlier saris in its pile. The piece appreciates as the surface mellows and the ikat pattern softens further with foot traffic.

The piece in a room

The 6' x 9' format suits a study, a primary bedroom under a queen bed with carpet showing on three sides, or a sitting area with a four-seater sofa pulled forward. The ivory and graphite palette wants pale walls and a single piece of strong art on one wall rather than a gallery hang. It pairs with walnut, brass, oiled leather, and stone-coloured upholstery. Polished marble floors carry the silk shimmer particularly well.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a quarter turn each season so the pile distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, never with a beater bar; silk is more delicate than wool and a beater bar will tear the surface within months. Blot any spill with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. Specialist silk hand wash every five years rather than dry cleaning.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
