Ikat is one of the oldest resist-dye traditions in textile history. The technique is to bind sections of yarn before dyeing, so the dye does not penetrate the bound passages, and then weave the partially-dyed yarn into a cloth where the figures emerge with the soft blurred edge that gives ikat its name in Indonesian, meaning to bind. This rug carries the ikat figure into a hand-knotted carpet format, with sari silk as the pile.
Two weavers worked this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom in India for about four months. The pile is reclaimed sari silk, sourced from the cutting waste of the sari trade, hand-cleaned and respun before knotting. The cotton foundation supports the silk weight; after weaving the rug was sheared close to the foundation so the silk lustre reads at room distance.
The composition
An ivory ground holds blurred ikat figures in soft taupe and pale beige, with the soft rust accents that the recycled silk supplies in irregular passages. The silk catches and releases light as you move around the rug, giving the field a quiet animation that wool does not produce. The blurred edges of the figures are the visual signature of true resist dyeing, here imitated through batch dyeing of the silk before knotting.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted sari silk rugs at this size are priced at two to four times this MSRP in Western markets. The fibre is recycled, the labour is not. A silk pile gains lustre with use; the rug appreciates rather than depreciating. Compare against an antique Caucasian ikat or a contemporary hand-loomed silk piece and the value sits clearly with the rug in your shopping cart.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary bedroom against a queen bed, a study, or a small sitting room with two-seat upholstery. The ivory palette is light enough to brighten a room with darker walls, and quiet enough to recede in a room with strong art on the walls. Pairs with linen, with oak and walnut, with brass lamps. Silk lustre reads best in a room with mixed natural and warm electric light.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly on the lowest suction setting only; never use a beater bar on silk. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth. Use felt pads under furniture legs that sit on the rug. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five years. With this care the ivory ground holds its tone and the silk holds its lustre.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
