Ikat is a resist-dye discipline, not a weave. The yarn is bound and dyed in patterned bundles before any of it touches a loom, so the figures in the cloth carry a soft edge that no print can imitate. Central Asian, Indonesian and Indian traditions all converge on the technique.

About around four months on the loom, with Two hands at work. The yarn was tied off and dyed in small batches before weaving began, then strung on the warp with the figures already embedded. Every irregularity in the registration is built into the medium.

The composition

A beige register runs through the composition as the structural colour. The geometry is sized to be read whole at standing distance and to reward inspection from a low chair beside the rug. Plant dye gives the surface its slow tonal drift; the slight unevenness across the field is the visible argument for the medium and is what keeps the piece from looking printed. From across the room the field gathers into one quiet ground; on close approach the small irregularities become visible as life in the surface.

What you are buying

Antique workshop carpets in this tradition with comparable scale and condition appear at international auction at multiples of this price when they appear at all. This is a new weaving on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to a comparable density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is not a property any other object on a floor can claim at any price.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' sits naturally beside a bed, under an entry console, or in a reading nook beside a deep armchair. At this scale the rug reads as a punctuation mark in the room rather than as the ground. The detail in the field is meant to register at close range, where the slow look is possible. Pairs well with leather, walnut, and warm-white walls; pale terrazzo and polished concrete sharpen the contrast.

Conservation

Hand-knotted construction holds for decades on a simple care regimen. Rotate the piece every six months. Vacuum suction-only weekly. Treat spills with a damp cloth from the outside in. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a conservator at five-year intervals. With this attention the piece runs a working life that comfortably exceeds the lifespan of any other domestic furnishing in the room.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
