Recycled sari silk entered the contemporary carpet vocabulary in the early 2000s as a deliberate revival of an older Indian thrift tradition. Worn-out silk saris were unpicked, the fibres carded back to spun yarn, and the resulting irregular silk thread used in flatweaves and pile carpets. The yarn carries colour from its previous life, which is why a sari silk pile reads with the slight chromatic shift and abrash of an antique even when newly woven. The ikat pattern in front of you draws on a separate Indian dyeing tradition where the warp is resist-dyed before weaving.

The piece was hand-knotted in India over roughly five months by three weavers on a vertical loom. Recycled sari silk over a cotton warp and weft, tied row by row in the Persian asymmetric knot with the cartoon hung beside the work. The pile was sheared by hand in a final pass with long flat shears to bring the silk to a uniform 8 mm so the pattern reads with the soft-edged blur that defines a true ikat rather than a printed imitation.

The composition

A rust ground carries an ikat repeat in shifting tones of warm brown, ivory, and softened red, with the characteristic blurred edges that come from resist-dyed warp transferred into knot. Sari silk holds light differently from new silk; it reads as patinated rather than glassy, which is what allows the rug to sit at the saturation it does without feeling synthetic. The rust will mellow with age and the ivories will warm into bone.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted silk carpets in this scale and density trade through European decorative dealers at the equivalent of $6,000 to $14,000. The recycled-sari silk used here is materially distinct from new mulberry silk; it carries a tonal life that new silk does not, and it places the carpet inside a contemporary Indian craft revival rather than inside the historical Persian silk tradition. The piece appreciates with use, like all hand-knotted silk work.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or a substantial bedroom with the silk lifting the ambient light in both. The rust palette pairs with warm wood floors, with leather, brass, terracotta plaster walls, and soft cream upholstery. Direct sunlight enriches sari silk; ambient incandescent light brings the lustre forward. Avoid cool fluorescent lighting around it, which deadens the colour.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the silk evenly. Vacuum weekly using suction only with the beater bar off; silk fibre is more delicate than wool and will not tolerate beater contact. Blot spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth, never rub, and never apply water without a conservator present. Schedule a hand wash by a silk-trained conservator every four to five years. With this care, the rug runs sixty years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
