Ikat patterns in hand-knotted wool are an unusual translation of an essentially flat-weave technique into pile construction. The original ikat is a resist-dyed yarn woven into a flat textile so the figures emerge with the soft blurred edges that the dye-resist process produces. Translated into a knotted carpet, the ikat figure is drawn rather than dyed-and-revealed, but the visual signature of the soft blurred edge is preserved through the way the colours are placed at the knot scale.
Three weavers shared this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a traditional density. The red ground was achieved with madder root prepared in copper vats; the ikat figures are drawn in deeper red and ivory. After weaving the rug was washed in a lustre bath and sheared close so the ikat figures read with their characteristic soft edge.
The composition
A deep red field carries ikat figures in deeper madder and ivory, drawn with the soft blurred edges that mark the resist-dye lineage. The figures repeat across the field at irregular intervals, the way an ikat fabric reads when seen at room distance. The red is built from madder, so it carries the slight tonal variation between dye batches that distinguishes hand-dyed wool. Over the first decade the red will deepen toward oxblood under the wool's lustre.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted ikat-pattern wool carpets at this size price at three to four times this MSRP at Western design dealers. The translation of an ikat figure into a knotted format is a more demanding draw than a Persian floral; the workshop must work the soft edges through careful colour placement at the knot scale. A hand-knotted wool piece appreciates with use as the wool gains lustre.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a drawing room with a three-seat sofa and paired armchairs, or a primary bedroom against a king bed. The deep red palette pairs with cream or ivory plaster walls, with limewashed white, with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco, with brass and bronze lamps. The ikat figure rewards close inspection; place the rug where the viewer can move around it.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn for even wear. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The madder red holds its depth with this routine.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
