Variations on a colour are what separate a memorable carpet from a forgettable one. A red rug that runs a single bath of madder reads flat in a room; a red rug that layers two or three depths of dye through bound-warp resist work reads as something with weight and history. Ikat carpets in the red register are particularly demanding because the colour is so eager to dominate, and the weaver has to actively pull it back through tonal control. This piece runs a different palette balance from its sibling pieces in the same series, even at the same dimensions.

Three weavers shared the loom for around five months on this carpet. The pile is recycled sari silk on a cotton foundation, with hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches so the variation across the field stays alive rather than mechanical. Each row was tied by hand against the cartoon hung at the loom's back, with the colour transitions softened in the ikat manner. The finished rug was sheared close, washed in cold water, and rested on a bamboo frame for twelve days before inspection.

The composition

A red field worked in three tonal depths, broken by ivory, ochre, and a recessed dusk plum running in vertical pillar bands. The colour temperature is slightly warmer than its companion ikat reds in the catalogue, with more lac in the dye and less madder. Silk takes light at two angles. The rug reads matte from one direction in the room and lustrous from the other, and the geometry resolves at a quarter further from the eye than a wool equivalent would.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted silk pieces in this size and density trade between two and three lakh in private rooms when the lineage is genuine. The recycled silk yarn does not affect the durability or the visual character of the finished piece; it simply lowers the raw material cost and lets the loom time hold the value. Silk compresses less than wool over decades and the surface develops a polish that a manufactured textile never reaches.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) holds the seating cluster in a primary living room or anchors a king bed in a master bedroom. The warm-red palette pairs well with brass, dark walnut, deep cream walls, and natural linen. Avoid placing it under a thin glass coffee table because the geometry of the rug will compete optically with whatever sits below the glass. A dense low table, in walnut or stone, reads better.

Conservation

Vacuum gently with the suction-only setting and the beater bar disabled. Rotate the rug every six months to even out light and traffic exposure. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and follow with cold water, never warm. Schedule a professional hand wash with a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care, the piece holds for a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
