Bound-warp resist dyeing produces a line that printing can imitate but never quite achieve. The pigment soaks the unbound thread and stops at the bound section, but the boundary is never a clean edge: capillary action draws the dye a fraction of a millimetre under the resist, and the resulting feather is what gives ikat its atmosphere. Translating that line from a flat woven cloth into a knotted carpet asks the weaver to read the cartoon as a colour gradient rather than a hard graphic, and the result holds the same softened-edge quality as the original textile.
Four weavers worked this piece on the loom for close to six months. The pile is hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation. The cartoon was hung at the back of the loom and translated knot by knot in line with the ikat tradition, with each colour transition tied as a graduated band rather than a sharp line. After the rug came down it was sheared by hand, washed in cold water, and stretched on a frame for two weeks to set the warp tension.
The composition
A red ground worked in three depths, with ivory, ochre, and a recessed plum forming the vertical pillar bands of an older Central Asian ikat. The dye edges feather. The pattern reads at distance as colour mass and at close range as detailed weft logic. Wool absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so the rug carries the warmth of the red without the high lustre that silk would bring. Over time the saturation deepens and the field unifies into a richer, less graphic ground.
What you are buying
Comparable hand-knotted wool pieces in 8' x 10' with this density and palette range trade between two lakh and three lakh in private rooms when the workshop lineage is verifiable. This piece is offered below that band because Rugsville works with the loom directly. Hand-spun wool of this twist and length holds the pattern definition for decades, develops a soft patina with use, and outlives a manufactured textile by a clear order of magnitude.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a sectional or a three-seat sofa with chairs, with the rug functioning as the colour ground for the entire seating arrangement. The red palette pairs well against deep cream walls, warm wood floors, and brass or oxidised iron lighting. It tolerates strong art on the walls and resists being overpowered by a saturated curtain. Avoid placing under a thin glass coffee table that would visually fragment the field.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off so the wool stays full. Rotate the rug a half turn every six months. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, then sponge with cold water if needed. Send the rug to a wool conservator for a professional hand wash every five years. With this care the piece will hold its character for eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
