Red is the hardest colour to weave at scale, because it carries either too much heat or too much shadow depending on which dye source the workshop uses. Madder root gives a coral red, lac insect a cooler claret, sappanwood a clear arterial red. The classical ikat tradition of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent learned to layer these dyes through resist-bound warps so the red on a finished textile reads as several reds at once, not a single uniform field. This rug carries that lineage into knotted pile.

Three weavers shared the loom for close to five months on this piece. The pile is recycled sari silk over a cotton foundation. Each row was tied by hand against the resist pattern drawn out at the back of the loom, with the colour transitions feathered by ikat-style edge logic rather than a hard line. After weaving, the rug was sheared low, washed in cold water, and stretched on a bamboo frame for the standard twelve-day rest that lets the warp settle.

The composition

A red ground in three tonal depths, with ivory, ochre, and dusk plum motifs distributed in vertical bands. The dye edges feather rather than meet cleanly, which is the optical signature of ikat. Silk catches light from two angles, so the surface shifts between matte and lustrous as you move past it. Over the next decade the brighter reds will warm and the ivory will turn to bone, with the overall colour temperature settling into a richer, more unified rust.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted sari silk pieces in this size and density typically sit between two lakh and three lakh in private dealer rooms when the lineage is genuine. The recycled-yarn approach reduces the fibre cost without affecting the loom time, which is what carries the value of any knotted rug. Silk pile compresses less than wool over decades and develops a polish from foot traffic that an unused rug never gets. The piece appreciates rather than wearing.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) reads as the working anchor for a primary seating group, or the foot-of-bed piece in a large master bedroom. The red palette warms cool stone floors, balances grey concrete, and pairs particularly well with brushed brass, dark walnut, and saturated jewel-tone upholstery. Soft incandescent light, rather than a strong overhead spotlight, brings out the silk's chromatic range.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only and never a beater bar, which compresses silk pile. Rotate twice a year so light exposure and traffic distribute evenly. Address spills with a dry cotton cloth and cold water only; never apply heat or chemical cleaners. Send the rug to a silk-specialist conservator for hand wash every five to seven years. The piece will run a century with this regimen.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
