Red and rust together are the oldest colour pairing in carpet weaving anywhere on earth. Madder root produces the warm coral red, walnut hull and oak gall together produce the rust brown, and the two have stood next to each other on tribal looms from the Caucasus to the Deccan for at least eight hundred years. An ikat reading of that pairing, where the colours bleed at the resist line rather than meeting at a clean knot edge, gives the field a softness that classical Anatolian work does not allow.
The carpet was hand-knotted in India by three weavers over roughly six months. Recycled sari silk was unwound from retired ceremonial cloth, washed, hand-spun on a charkha, and resist-dyed in two baths before reaching the loom. Each weaver tied around a thousand knots an hour against a cotton warp, working the ikat figure across the pile as they went. The result is a rug whose pattern lives at the fibre level rather than being printed onto the surface.
The composition
Deep rust forms the dominant ground. Coral red runs diagonally across it in broken bands, with smaller flecks of cream and ochre where the resist has lifted unevenly. Sari silk is never perfectly uniform, and that is the point: each metre of the field carries its own micro-variation in tone. Light hits the silk and the rug shifts between almost-orange in direct sun and brick-burgundy under lamplight. The rug behaves like a slow painting.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted silk rugs in this size from Western boutiques carry sticker prices three to five times higher, and the recycled-fibre provenance gives this piece an environmental story that newly farmed silk cannot match. Comparable antique ikats are scarce above 6' x 9'; an 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) at this density is unusual at any price. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' suits a study, a primary bedroom, or a sitting area under a long sofa. Rust and coral hold their own against terracotta brick, lime-washed white, oxblood leather, and brass. Avoid pairing with strong red upholstery, which will flatten the ikat shift. The rug wants the surrounding palette to stay quiet so the figure can read.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet end to end twice a year. Use only suction vacuuming with the beater bar disengaged; silk will fray quickly under mechanical brushing. Spot any spill immediately with a dry cotton cloth working from the outside in. Schedule a hand-wash by a silk specialist every six years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
