After weaving the carpet was hand-sheared close to relieve the motif edges by about two millimetres, washed in cold water, and rested on a frame for the standard twelve-day settling period.

The composition

A red field in three tonal depths, accented with ivory, ochre, and a recessed plum running as vertical pillar bands across the carpet. The dye edges feather rather than line up sharply. Bamboo silk catches light at two angles, so the rug reads matte from one viewing direction and lustrous from the other, with the saturated red becoming almost lacquered when the light comes in low across the floor. Over time the brighter accents settle and the ivory warms toward bone.
