The sari silk tradition began as an act of thrift. Vintage silk saris, retired after a lifetime of wear, were unravelled fibre by fibre and re-spun into yarn for weaving. The result is a pile that holds a depth of colour no fresh dye can replicate, because every strand has already been bathed, sun-dried, and softened across decades of use. Each rug in this lineage carries the chromatic memory of hundreds of garments and presents that memory as a single woven field.
This multicolour carpet was tied on a vertical loom in India by 2 weavers over three months. The yarn is recycled silk, hand-spun on a charkha and lashed to a cotton warp at roughly 160 knots per square inch. Across 4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm), that adds up to about 552,960 individual knots. The slubs and tonal jumps you see are not flaws. They are the signature of a fibre with a life before this loom.
The composition
A multicolour field carried with enough tonal variation that no two square feet of the rug read the same way. The geometry is set up so the eye moves across the surface rather than locking onto a single centre. Silk takes dye unevenly by design, and the resulting irregularities are the point of weaving the rug by hand instead of printing it. The composition rewards both the across-the-room glance and the close-range second look.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm)) is the right scale for a small living room, an entry, a study, or a primary bedside placement under the foot of the bed. The multicolour ground works against both light walls and saturated paint, and pairs with both walnut and oak floors.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet 180 degrees on a six-month cycle so direct light and footfall age the field uniformly. Use a suction-only vacuum at low power. Blot any spill at once with a dry cotton cloth. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool-trained conservator on a five-year cycle to flush out fine grit and refresh the dye depth. With reasonable care the piece is generational and gains rather than loses character with age.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
