Resist-dyed yarn is an idea that travelled along the trade routes between Central Asia, Indonesia, Japan, and the Indian subcontinent for at least two thousand years. Each region developed its own grammar for binding the warp threads before they reached the loom, but they all share that same atmospheric line where pattern and ground breathe into each other rather than meeting at a hard edge. This carpet translates the ikat tradition into pile, holding the soft optical bleed that flat ikat textiles are known for.
Four weavers shared the loom for close to six months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied row by row across a cotton warp and weft, with each weaver reading the cartoon hung at the back of the loom and matching the colour blocks against the master pattern. After the piece came down, it was washed in cold water, sheared by hand for surface evenness, and stretched on a frame for ten days to set the foundation.
The composition
A multi-coloured field laid out in the vertical pillar logic of older Central Asian ikat. Teal, ochre, ivory, soft brick, and a recessed slate move through the carpet in feathered bands. Wool dyed in small batches carries the variation that gives the colour its life; a single bath dye reads flat in comparison. The ground is open enough to let the geometry breathe, while the colour density holds the rug as a single piece of work rather than a collection of fragments.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted wool pieces of this density at 8' x 10' generally trade between one lakh seventy-five and two lakh fifty in private dealer rooms when the lineage and condition are comparable. This piece is offered well below that band because Rugsville works with the workshops directly. Wool of this length and twist holds the pattern definition for decades and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating like a manufactured textile.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is a working living-room scale, sitting under a sectional with the front legs of the sofa on the rug and the entire field reading as the room's ground plane. The multi palette is cooperative with both painted brick and warm cream walls, with mixed upholstery, and with both walnut and oak floors. The geometry sits comfortably under a six-seat dining table without becoming the dominant element.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so foot traffic and light exposure even out. Vacuum weekly with the suction-only nozzle. Blot any liquid immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub in. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care, the piece will run seventy to ninety years before serious restoration becomes a question.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
