Ikat is older than written history in parts of South and Central Asia. The technique resists the dye by binding the yarn before it ever touches the loom, so the pattern is born of the warp itself rather than printed onto a finished cloth. When that idiom moves from textile into pile carpet, the soft edges of the dye-resist remain, and the geometry takes on a feathered, atmospheric quality that no painted pattern can replicate. The rug in front of you reads ikat through the lens of a knotted wool floor piece.

Three weavers worked the loom for around five months on this piece. The pile is recycled sari silk knotted across a cotton foundation, with the colour blocking laid in row by row from the artisan's reading of the ikat cartoon at the back of the loom. After weaving the rug was washed twice and sheared by hand to relieve the highest motifs above the ground field by about two millimetres, which is the cut that lets the geometry resolve at standing height.

The composition

A multi field of teal, terracotta, ivory, gold, and dusk plum, organised in vertical pillar shapes typical of older ikat textiles. The dye edges feather rather than line up cleanly, the way an ink wash bleeds into wet paper. Silk takes light at two angles, so the rug appears matte from one side of the room and luminous from the other. Over time the brighter accents soften and the ground colour deepens into the body of the design.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted sari silk pieces in 6' x 9' with this kind of palette range and density sit between two lakh fifty and three lakh fifty in private dealer rooms across India. The recycled silk yarn carries the same lustre and compression resistance as new mulberry silk, at a substantially lower fibre cost. The rug appreciates as the silk polishes with foot traffic rather than wearing out.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a primary seating arrangement of a three-seat sofa with two pull-up chairs, or a king bed with a low bench. The multi palette is forgiving of mixed upholstery and works particularly well against pale lime-washed walls and warm wood floors. Avoid placing under a strong overhead chandelier; silk wants raking side light to read its full chromatic range.

Conservation

Vacuum gently using the suction-only setting, never a beater bar, which crushes silk fibre. Rotate twice a year so the surface ages evenly. Treat any spill immediately by blotting with a dry cotton cloth, then leaving the area to air dry. Engage a silk-trained conservator for a hand wash every five years. The piece is good for a hundred years of measured use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
