The ikat is one of the oldest resist techniques in the textile world, predating block print and woven brocade in the Indian subcontinent by several centuries. Threads are tied off in bundles, dyed, untied, retied, and dyed again before they ever reach the loom, so the pattern lives inside the yarn rather than being applied to its surface. Translating that logic into a hand-knotted pile rug instead of a flatwoven panel is a comparatively recent move, made possible only because spinners in India learned to twist recycled sari silk fine enough to take the resist cleanly.

This piece was knotted on a vertical loom in India by three weavers across roughly six months. The pile is silk reclaimed from worn saris, washed, sorted by tone, and respun on hand-cranked wheels. Each strand was passed through indigo and ivory dye baths before knotting, with selective resist binding to produce the broken light-blue field. The cotton warp and weft hold the silk pile under tension, and the back is hand-finished with cotton selvedges.

The composition

A pale, slightly powdery blue dominates, with cream chevrons and a near-grey shadow tone running diagonally across the field. The blur belongs to ikat, never quite registering, never sharply offset. Silk catches light like polished porcelain, so the blue reads cooler at noon and almost lavender by lamplight. There is no central medallion. The composition rewards a long look from across the room rather than a quick glance from above.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted silk ikats at 8' x 10' from Western galleries are listed in the $5,000 to $9,000 band, and antique Uzbek silk ikats of equivalent surface area regularly clear $10,000 at New York auction. Recycled-silk pile of this density is rare. The piece sits at a fraction of its replacement cost, holds value over time, and gains a softer hand with each year of careful use.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a sitting room arranged around a low table or a primary bedroom under a king bed. Light blue at this saturation pulls with white-painted walls, lime-washed surfaces, and pale oak flooring. Pair with weathered brass, indigo linen, and clear glass. Strong pattern on upholstery will fight the ikat blur, so keep the cushions and curtains plain.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly on the lowest suction with the brush bar lifted off the surface. Rotate by a quarter turn each season, which is gentler on silk than a half turn done twice a year. Spills lift with a dry cotton cloth and patience, never with detergent. Have a conservator wash the rug every six to eight years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
