Ikat is a resist-dye tradition older than most weaving vocabularies, in which the warp and weft are bound and dyed before the loom is dressed. The blurred edges of the resulting motifs are not a flaw of the process but the signature of it, and the form has migrated from Central Asian silks to Indonesian cottons to the floor coverings on the loom in front of you. The light blue field in this carpet reads the ikat language through recycled sari silk, which gives the motifs both the soft edge of the original tradition and a tonal complexity printed pattern cannot replicate.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for close to five months. The pile is hand-spun recycled sari silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Persian asymmetric knot. The fibre arrives in colour, drawn from the unpicked source garments, so the light blue carries flecks of pale grey, ivory, and an occasional accent of warmer tone that the weaver kept rather than removed. The carpet was sheared close after weaving so the ikat softness sits flat against the field.
The composition
Light blue dominates with cream-edged ikat motifs running through the field in a loose vertical drift. The silk lustre catches light at oblique angles, which means the carpet reads paler in raking light and deeper in flat overhead light. The blurred motif edges are characteristic of resist dye and they keep the pattern from feeling rigid. Over the first five years the blue will deepen by a half tone and the silk will gain a softer surface sheen.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted silk carpets of this scale and density typically sell at the European silk dealers in the ten to eighteen thousand dollar range. This is a freshly woven piece in the same construction with the recycled fibre offering a more sustainable provenance than virgin silk. A silk carpet of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the colour will hold its character through generations of ownership.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a smaller drawing room, a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, or a formal dining area with a six-seat table. The light blue lifts rooms with low natural light and pairs cleanly with brass, pale oak, walnut, and white-painted plaster. Avoid placing under direct hot sunlight, which silk pile registers more sharply than wool.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet by a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; silk is fibre-bursting under aggressive mechanical contact. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water immediately, never rub. A silk-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet with a pH-neutral wash every six to eight years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
