An ivory-ground ikat is a quieter proposition than its red or indigo counterpart. The pattern reads through tonal contrast rather than chromatic punch, with the resist edges feathering across a calmer palette of cream, sand, and pale ochre. The effect is closer to a heavy linen weave or a faded watercolour than to the saturated geometric ikats that travelled the Silk Road. This carpet works in that subtler idiom, holding the optical line of resist dyeing in a colour register meant to coexist with light walls and pale upholstery.
Three weavers shared the loom for nearly five months on this piece. The pile is recycled sari silk over a cotton foundation. The cartoon was drawn out as a tonal map rather than a contrast graphic, and each row was tied by hand to match the soft edge logic of bound-warp resist dyeing. The finished rug was sheared low, washed twice in cold water, and stretched on a frame for the standard twelve-day rest before inspection and packing.
The composition
An ivory field with whisper variations of cream, sand, beige, and cool putty. The motif work is laid out in the vertical pillar logic of older Central Asian ikat, but at a tonal whisper rather than a contrast statement. Silk catches light at two angles, so what reads as a uniform cream from one side of the room reveals layered tonal shifts when the light comes in from the other. Over time the rug warms a quarter step toward bone, never losing the soft tonal grammar it began with.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted sari silk in 6' x 9' at this density typically prices between two lakh and three lakh fifty in private dealer settings. The price floor for a comparable mulberry silk piece would be substantially higher, and the recycled silk yarn carries the same lustre and compression characteristics as new fibre. Silk pile rewards use rather than wearing out under it. The cost-to-loom-time ratio in this piece is unusually favourable for the buyer.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) holds an intimate seating arrangement of a three-seat sofa with a chair, or anchors a queen bed in a primary bedroom. The ivory palette settles particularly well in rooms with whitewashed walls, raw oak floors, and natural linen upholstery. Avoid pairing with stark white minimalism, which can make the rug read as cream against bright white; it asks instead for the company of natural textures.
Conservation
Vacuum gently with suction only, never a beater bar. Rotate the rug every six months so light and traffic age the surface evenly; an ivory ground shows wear earlier than a saturated one and benefits from rotation. Blot any spill immediately with a dry cotton cloth and use cold water only. Have the rug hand-washed by a silk specialist every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
