Bamboo silk is one of the more recent additions to the carpet weaver's fibre cabinet. Mechanically extruded from regenerated bamboo cellulose, the fibre carries a lustre between mulberry silk and rayon, with a slightly cooler chromatic temperament that takes pale and ivory tones particularly well. When it lands in a hand-knotted carpet, the surface picks up a quiet, almost ceramic sheen that wool alone cannot give. This rug works that quality through the soft geometric grammar of ikat resist dyeing.

Three weavers shared the loom for around five and a half months on this piece. The pile is bamboo silk over a cotton foundation. Each row was tied by hand against the cartoon at the back of the loom, with the resist-edge feather characteristic of ikat translated knot by knot. The finished rug was sheared close to relieve the motifs above the field by about two millimetres, washed in cold water, and stretched on a frame for ten days to set the foundation before inspection.

The composition

An ivory ground with motif work in cream, sand, putty, and a recessed warm grey, organised in the vertical pillar bands of older Central Asian ikat. The dye edges feather in the bound-warp manner, even though the colour register is held in a quiet tonal range. Bamboo silk catches light at two angles. The rug reads almost porcelain from one viewing angle and softer from another. Over time the cream warms a quarter step toward bone and the lustre deepens with use.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted bamboo silk pieces in this size and density typically sit between two and three lakh in private dealer settings. The Rugsville pricing reflects a direct workshop relationship and does not absorb a dealer margin. Bamboo silk pile compresses less than wool and develops the soft polish of a used textile rather than the mat-down of a worn one. The rug appreciates with foot traffic instead of degrading under it.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a primary living room with a sectional, or a master bedroom with a king bed pulled forward and a bench at the foot. The ivory palette settles into rooms with limewashed walls, raw oak or pale travertine floors, and natural linen upholstery. Avoid pairing with high-key bright white because the rug reads as cream against pure white; it asks for textural neighbours rather than chromatic ones. Soft incandescent light brings out the bamboo silk's lustre.

Conservation

Vacuum gently with the suction-only nozzle and never a beater bar, which crushes the pile. Rotate the rug every six months because the ivory ground reveals uneven wear earlier than a saturated one. Blot any spill within seconds using a dry cotton cloth and cold water only. Send the rug to a silk-specialist conservator for hand wash every five to seven years. With this care the piece holds for eighty years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
