Complete your setup
Ikat is a resist-dye discipline, not a weaving discipline. The pattern is bound into the warp threads with cotton string before they ever reach the loom, dyed, untied, and only then woven. The blur at every edge of every motif comes from the small movement of the threads in the dye bath. That softness is the entire point of the form.
The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 2 weavers shared the loom across 2-3 months, working at roughly 100 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 345 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.
The composition
The motifs feather at every edge, the way an ikat always does, and the colour shifts where the dye took unevenly across the bound yarn. Read as a flat graphic the field is symmetric. Read at close range it is full of small chromatic events. The dominant tones run to ivory.
What you are buying
This is an honest entry into hand-knotted collecting. Wool, cotton foundation, hand-tied knots, finished by hand. The price reflects the smaller scale of the piece rather than any compromise in the weaving. Used and conserved, it holds and grows in value the way every hand-tied carpet does.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is the working scale for a flat-living dining area or a primary bedroom with the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed. The composition fills the eye without overwhelming the room. Sits well alongside leather, brass, ceramic, and the soft greys of poured concrete.
Conservation
Rotate end to end every six months so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside in, and never rub the pile. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years keeps the dye bright and the foundation flexible. With this routine the rug runs three generations.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
