Sari silk as a carpet fibre comes out of a quietly radical late-twentieth-century rethink of what hand-knotted weaving could use as raw material. When silk saris reach the end of their wearable life, the surviving fibre is unwound, hand-spun back into thread, and made available to weavers who can knot it into pile. Each metre of yarn carries the colour history of the original sari, which is why no two sari-silk rugs are exactly alike. The ikat field on this carpet is built directly from that recovered material.
The 8' x 11' (244 x 335 cm) piece was woven in India by three weavers over close to seven months. The pile is hand-spun recycled sari silk on a cotton foundation, knotted at the rate of two to three thousand knots per square inch with a fine asymmetric knot suited to silk's slick body. The ikat pattern was set on the warp before knotting began through a resist-dye process that prints the design on the threads themselves, which is what gives ikat its characteristic feathered edge.
The composition
A long field of greys, dove, ash, smoke, charcoal, broken by the soft horizontal feathering of the ikat resist. The silk catches and releases light at every angle, so the field shifts from cool to warm as you walk past it. Threads of ivory, faint blush, and pale gold from the source saris drift through the grey at irregular intervals. Reads as a calm modernist composition from across a room and as a richly layered textile artifact at close range.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted silk rugs of this density and size from Indian and Chinese workshops sell at Western interior galleries between four and eight thousand pounds, and Western auction comparables for similar pieces routinely close above six thousand. The recycled sari source material adds a sustainability premium in many markets that this listing does not reflect. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; silk knots tighten and the surface develops a deeper sheen with the years.
The piece in a room
Silk in this colourway sits best in a quiet, considered room. Beneath a long low sofa in dark linen, with brass and walnut accents, against pale grey or chalky off-white walls. Equally at home in a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, where the silk catches morning light. Avoid heavy furniture legs that compress silk pile; consider felt protectors. Pairs beautifully with abstract art and minimalist sculpture.
Conservation
Silk wants gentler handling than wool. Vacuum every fortnight on the lowest suction setting with the beater bar fully off. Spin the rug a half turn each year. Blot any spill instantly with a dry cotton cloth and let it air dry in shade. Hand wash by a silk-trained conservator every five years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. With this regimen the silk holds its hand and lustre across multiple decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
