Black grounds are unusual in the ikat tradition because most natural dye baths struggle to reach a true deep black on protein and cellulose fibre. The historical workaround was a process of overdyeing indigo over walnut hull, which produced a near-black with a quiet blue undertone, and that compromise gave the colour its character: not a flat industrial black but a black that breathed. Carpets that read as black usually read as something else first when you stand close to them. This rug operates in that lineage.
Three weavers shared the loom for around five and a half months on this piece. The pile is bamboo silk over a cotton foundation. The cartoon was drawn as a near-black field with motif work in tonal escapes of charcoal, slate, and cool ivory, and each row was tied by hand against the back of the loom. The resist-edge feather of bound-warp ikat was hand-translated knot by knot. The finished rug was sheared low, washed in cold water, and rested on a frame for ten days.
The composition
A near-black ground reading as deep indigo-charcoal under raking light, with motif work in soft slate, oxidised silver, and a faint warm cream. The pattern follows the vertical pillar bands of older Central Asian ikat, with edges feathered in the bound-warp manner. Bamboo silk gives the dark field a lustre that wool would not, with the fibre catching highlights along the geometry. Over time the black settles into a richer indigo-toned dark, the way old denim breaks into its true colour.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted bamboo silk in 8' x 10' with this density typically prices between two and three lakh in private dealer rooms. A black-ground piece is harder to weave well than a saturated colour, because every irregularity in the pile shows under raking light, and the workshop has to maintain pile evenness across nearly twenty-five square metres. The Rugsville pricing reflects direct sourcing. Silk pile of this construction appreciates with use.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits as a strong graphic anchor under a sectional or three-seat sofa, with the dark field acting as the chromatic ground for everything above it. The black palette pairs particularly well with bone china, pewter, brushed nickel, and pale upholstery in stone, oat, and warm cream. Strong sunlight is welcome on this rug; it reveals the indigo undertone that interior light keeps hidden. Avoid pairing with monochrome black furniture, which collapses the contrast.
Conservation
Vacuum gently with the suction nozzle only. Rotate every six months so direct light and footfall age the surface evenly; black grounds reveal traffic earlier than mid-tones. Blot any spill within seconds with a dry cotton cloth and use cold water only. Engage a silk-trained conservator for a hand wash every five years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to ninety years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
