Ikat is a resist-dye method, not a weave pattern. The threads are bound and dyed before they ever touch the loom, so the design lives inside the yarn rather than being applied to a finished cloth. The slight haze that defines an ikat, the soft bleed at the edge of every motif, comes from the dye seeping into bound threads and from the impossibility of perfectly aligning hand-dyed warps. That blur is the signature of the technique. Translated from textile to pile carpet, the motifs lose their woven softness and gain weight, but the rhythm of the design survives.
This piece was hand-knotted in India by two weavers. The work ran for two to three months on a vertical loom, with the bamboo silk pile tied row by row against a cotton foundation and the comb beating each row down before the next was begun. The pile is sheared after the field is complete, the back washed and dried, and the fringes finished by hand.
The composition
A deep ground of charcoal sets the field and absorbs the line work, so the pattern surfaces only on careful looking. The dye shifts subtly between the wool fibres in the pile, giving the dark a worked texture rather than a flat printed weight. Ikat motifs march in vertical registers, their edges deliberately blurred to recall the resist-dye textiles the figure was born in. The eye reads the rhythm of the verticals before any individual figure resolves, and the rug holds together at room distance even when the close-up reading shows every blurred boundary as deliberate.
What you are buying
This is the entry point to hand-knotted collecting. The rug is woven on the same kind of loom and to the same craft standards as pieces several times its price; the difference sits in the design lineage rather than in the labour. The piece holds its value through use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' the rug fills the gap between sofa and coffee table, sits beside a bed as a single anchor, or holds an entryway with weight. Pairs with raw oak, brushed steel, and white walls; the ground reads as architectural rather than ornamental.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; the bar abrades knot heads on a hand-knotted pile and shortens the life of the rug. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub, and reach for a wool-trained conservator for any wash rather than a generic carpet cleaner. With this care the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
