Heriz Serapi carpets defined the American taste for Persian rugs through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bold geometric medallions, terracotta and indigo palettes, and a coarser, more graphic knot than the city workshops of central Persia. The Serapi sub-grouping refers to the older, finer, more drawing-led pieces that dealers in New York and London pulled apart from the broader Heriz output. The piece in front of you carries that lineage in a contemporary weaving.

The carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly five and a half months by three weavers on a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, tied row by row by feel and memory. The dyestuffs are vegetable, prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and weld, with the rust ground built up through deep madder over a light gold base. The indigo for the navy was matured in a fermenting vat over two weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A rust-red field carries a stepped central medallion in indigo navy and ivory, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion in reverse colour. The Heriz drawing is angular rather than curvilinear; geometry that reads from across the room, with each motif holding its own. The rust will lighten over the years into a softer terracotta and the indigos will deepen, the natural arc of vegetable colour. The ivory will warm into bone.

What you are buying

Period Heriz Serapi carpets in 8' x 10' scale with strong colour and clean condition appear at Christie's and Sotheby's in the range of $25,000 to $70,000. This is a new piece in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, in the Persian asymmetric knot, with vegetable-dyed colour, in the same drawing tradition. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating; that property is the difference between a furnishing and an asset.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical Heriz scale and reads as a primary anchor in a living room or under a six to eight seat dining table. Rust and navy pairs with warm wood floors, with linen and leather upholstery, and with cream or oat plaster walls. Direct sunlight is a friend to a vegetable-dyed Heriz; UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward, and never rub. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five years. With this care, the rug runs eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
