The Heriz pattern came out of the village looms of north-western Persia in the late nineteenth century, where weavers translated the curvilinear medallions of the city workshops into the bold rectilinear geometry the village loom could carry. A Heriz medallion is built from straight lines and diamond corners; what looks like a stylised flower in a Tabriz becomes an angular diamond in a Heriz. The pattern travels because it does not require fine knotting to read at full strength.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for around four and a half months. Hand-spun wool was tied in the Persian asymmetric knot against a cotton foundation. The rust ground required madder root matured for three weeks in copper vats and applied across two successive dippings to set the depth without burning the highlights. Indigo for the central medallion ran through four baths in series. Walnut hull and oak gall carried the secondary borders.
The composition
A massive central medallion in deep indigo and ivory anchors the rust ground, with corner spandrels in matching indigo that complete the geometry. The border carries a turtle motif in walnut and cream, the canonical Heriz boundary that has not changed in 130 years. The rust will warm into terracotta over a decade as the madder settles, and the indigo will deepen. Abrash banding across the field is intentional and will become more visible with use.
What you are buying
Antique Heriz carpets of comparable scale and palette realise $9,000 to $20,000 at international rug auctions when their corners and selvedges have survived intact. This is a new weaving in the same village idiom, on the same loom, in the same fibre. A vegetable-dyed Heriz appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an inversion of how almost any other domestic object behaves over a thirty-year horizon.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living group, a smaller dining room, or the foot of a king bed. The rust and blue palette pairs with walnut and oak floors, leather upholstery in cognac or chestnut, brass fixtures, and walls in chalk or warm grey. The geometry of the Heriz reads from across the room and does not require close inspection to land its visual weight.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every five years. The Heriz construction is famously durable; with this care it will outlive its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
