The Heriz district in northwest Iran weaves carpets with a stepped, large-scale geometry that reads from across a room. Their drawing is angular where Tabriz is curved. The composition here keeps that reading distance and that confidence of straight line.

Two weavers shared the loom for 4 months. Around 778 thousand hand-tied knots at roughly 180 per square inch, every one set against a vertical beam by feel. The pile is highland wool, prepared in small batches and lowered into copper vats for plant-based dye drawn from indigo, weld, oak gall, and walnut hull, each colour matured for two to three weeks before the wool is dyed. The foundation is cotton, hand-spun and tensioned across the warp before the first row of knots is tied. The fringe at either end is the warp itself, knotted off and trimmed by hand once the rug comes off the loom. The piece reads at 2'6" x 12' (76 x 366 cm) in red and beige, finished in India.

The composition

A field of red and beige holds the composition. The drawing is set down with a discipline that lets the pattern read at distance and resolve on approach. The colour is held just below shouting volume so the rug carries a room without claiming ownership of it. The slight irregularity in the dye batches gives the field a depth that printed cloth cannot replicate, and that depth is the reason hand-finished wool keeps its place in considered interiors.

What you are buying

Equivalent hand-knotted wool carpets sourced through Western dealers carry a multiple of this listing. What you are paying for is months of work by a small team of weavers, the cost of long-staple wool, and a piece of textile that gains rather than loses value across its working life. There is no other object you put on a floor with that property at any price.

The piece in a room

2'6" x 12' (76 x 366 cm) is the working corridor and bedside scale. The pattern repeats across its length without obvious tile, so the rug reads as a single composition rather than as a strip of repeating motif. The red register works against pale plaster walls and against panelled hallways with equal hold. The piece adds a soft footfall to a passage that would otherwise echo, which is the second reason a runner exists.

Conservation

Keep the rug out of direct sunlight for prolonged hours per day to slow the natural lightening of plant dye. Vacuum with suction only. Rotate twice a year. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five years. Properly cared for, the rug runs three generations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?
