Heriz is the village name behind one of the most resilient design traditions in Persian weaving, a regional language built on a bold central medallion, large-scale corner spandrels, and an angular geometric drawing rooted in the limitations of a coarse loom and the discipline of village weavers. The navy carried in this rug is the deep oxidised indigo that defines the tradition, a blue that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

Three weavers in India shared the loom for roughly five months. Around 1.5 million symmetric Turkish knots were tied row by row, the wool drawn from highland fleece chosen for the slightly springy hand the Heriz pile requires. The indigo was fermented in two vats over fourteen days, then layered against madder and undyed cream so the colour reads with depth rather than as a flat field.

The composition

A central medallion in faded ivory floats over a navy ground. Corner spandrels echo the medallion in scale, and the field is filled with the angular vine work that distinguishes Heriz from its softer cousins. The geometry is unapologetically large. Over the next decade the navy will hold its saturation while the cream will warm and the rust accents will mellow into terracotta. The drawing is village, not court, and the rug is the better for it.

What you are buying

Antique Heriz carpets with comparable scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of twenty to fifty thousand dollars. This is a new weaving in the same village tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre and at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which holds for no other domestic object at this price.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits naturally beneath a six-to-eight seater dining table or a full-length sectional. The navy ground anchors a room with pale walls and lets warm wood, leather, and brass speak above it. Direct sunlight is welcome here. UV restores the dye depth that interior lighting slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so foot traffic and daylight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction alone and the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash with a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this discipline the rug runs a century and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
