The Heriz pattern grew out of the village looms of north-west Persia in the second half of the nineteenth century and was prized for one quality above all others: the geometry was strong enough to read at room scale without losing its tribal honesty. A central medallion in stepped angles, corner spandrels that mirror it, and a vine-and-rosette border. Where city carpets were drawn from full-scale cartoons, the Heriz weavers worked largely from memory, which is why no two are precisely identical and why the lines hold a slight irregularity that a printed design never carries.

This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) piece took three to four weavers around six to seven months at the loom. Wool was hand-spun and dyed in small lots so the blue ground carries a faint abrash, the natural tonal shift between dye batches that village weaving has always been judged on. The foundation is cotton, the knots are Persian asymmetric, and the pile was sheared low enough to keep the geometry crisp.

The composition

A rust medallion centred on a deep blue field, with ivory cornerpieces and a guard band of softer indigo. The colours are traditional Heriz colours, kept in the proportions the original village looms used. The blue is not flat; it carries the stripes of abrash that occur when one dye lot finishes and the next begins. Over years the rust will warm and the blue will settle. The geometry is built to age, not to hold a factory-fresh finish.

What you are buying

Antique Heriz carpets from 1900-1930 with comparable density and condition trade in the range of $20,000 to $45,000 at international auction. This is a contemporary weaving in the same village tradition, on the same loom type, in the same fibre. At ₹1,79,999 the rug is priced at the cost of materials and weaver-months rather than at the auction comparable. A hand-knotted wool carpet of this size and tradition appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the value is largely independent of fashion cycles.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' anchors a full sitting room or a dining table that seats ten. The rust and blue palette pairs with leather, with brass, with walnut and oak floors, and with off-white walls that allow the saturation to carry the room. Lay the rug as the organising element rather than as an accent under furniture, with a generous border of bare floor showing on at least two sides.

Conservation

Rotate one half turn twice a year. Vacuum weekly, suction only, never use a beater bar. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and address red wine or oil immediately. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. With this care the rug serves three generations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
