Heriz weavers worked from memory rather than from a paper cartoon, which is why the geometry here is firm but never mechanical. Each medallion has the slight asymmetry of a hand-drawn line.

Around 518,400 Persian-asymmetric knots, hand-tied to a cotton foundation by a single weaver over 5 months. The wool was washed, carded, and spun by hand before it ever met dye. Dovetailed selvedges and original fringe, finished as the weave came off the loom.

The composition

Look at the field first. Rust carries the composition, and the drawing rides over it without crowding. The border is held narrow so the eye stays on the central reading. Dye saturation moves slightly across the field, the way hand-spun yarn always does, and the variation reads as breath rather than as flaw. The pile is hand-trimmed to a low, even height, which keeps the rust drawing crisp and lets the wool's natural sheen catch light at low angles. What the rug is now is the starting condition. The patina is the long-term composition, and a well-made hand-knotted carpet is engineered to gain rather than lose through that process.

Plan the rug to extend at least a foot beyond a sofa on the long axis. The drawing is built to be seen, not crowded under furniture.

Conservation

Two rotations a year, suction-only vacuuming, immediate blotting on spills, and a conservator wash every five to seven years. The pile will mellow with use rather than wear away.
