Vegetable dyeing is older than synthetic dyeing by several thousand years and survives in the heritage carpet workshops because nothing else gives wool the same depth of saturation or the same way of ageing. Madder root for the reds, indigo for the blues, oak gall and walnut hull for the browns and golds, weld for the yellows. Each dye lot is matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool is lowered, and each lot is slightly different from the last.
This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) heritage carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly five months by a team of two to three weavers. The wool is hand-spun, slightly uneven by design, and ties the Persian asymmetric knot against a vertical beam. The foundation is cotton, drawn taut between selvedges. Every step from raw fleece to finished rug is done by hand.
The composition
A balanced field of soft rust, faded indigo, ivory, and aged gold worked into a vine and palmette repeat. The colours read first as a single warm composition and resolve into individual notes only on approach. The slight variation that vegetable dye produces, the abrash, runs as a band of lighter ground across one section of the field, the kind of accident that the trade calls a feature rather than a flaw.
What you are buying
Antique vegetable-dyed wool carpets in this size and condition trade in international auction rooms in the $10,000 to $30,000 band. This is a new weaving made to the same standard, with the same dyestuffs, on the same kind of loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and at this price the wool, the dye process, and the weaver-months involved are well below market.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) holds the centre of a sitting room under a four-seat sofa, or anchors a study with a partner desk and reading chair. The warm palette lifts cool grey walls and finds harmony with bleached oak, walnut, and unfinished brass. Direct sunlight will deepen the indigo and warm the rust over the first decade of use.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to even the ageing of the dye under light. Vacuum weekly on suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and avoid rubbing. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years is the right interval for this construction. The rug is built to run a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
