Tibetan rug weaving is the oldest continuous high-altitude carpet tradition, developed in monastery and household workshops above 3000 metres where the cold and the slow growth of the local sheep produced a wool with exceptional lanolin content. The technique migrated south after 1959 with the Tibetan diaspora and was taken up by Indian weaving studios working with Tibetan masters. The Herbal palette is a contemporary expression of the tradition; soft beige, ivory, and sage producing a quiet field.

Three weavers shared this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted with the Tibetan loop knot that gives the surface its characteristic plush hand. After weaving the rug was washed in a lustre bath, sheared by hand to even the pile, and the selvedges hand-finished along the long edges.

The composition

A soft beige field with quiet incidents in ivory and faint sage, drawn loosely rather than in a crisp repeat. The Tibetan tradition prefers tonal variation to figural drawing; the eye reads light and texture rather than pattern. The wool's high lanolin content gives the surface a soft sheen that wool from lower-altitude sheep does not produce. Over the first decade the beige will warm slightly into bone, and the lustre will deepen as the lanolin works to the surface.

What you are buying

Tibetan-tradition hand-knotted carpets at this size price at three to four times this MSRP at international design dealers. The Tibetan loop knot is slower to tie than the Persian asymmetric knot, which is why the loom commitment is longer than for an equivalent Persian-style piece. A Tibetan-knot rug holds its plush hand for decades and gains lustre with foot traffic.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. The herbal beige palette pairs with limewashed walls in cream or warm grey, with mid-tone walls in soft sage or terracotta, with walnut and oak floors, with linen upholstery. The Tibetan plush rewards bare feet; place the rug in a sitting area where the sensory quality is part of the room's daily experience.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The lanolin content of Tibetan wool is preserved by gentle cleaning; harsh detergents strip it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
