Rugsville Hanna Persian Gold Brown Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

The Hanna pattern grew out of a Persian collection family that included the Mood weavings, fine carpets that have been collected for traditional drawing combined with a thicker pile than the typical Tabriz format allowed. The drawing on this rug carries that lineage, with a deep gold ground supporting brown floral tracery in the manner of the early twentieth-century commercial production. The form is unfussy and architectural rather than decorative.

Three weavers shared the loom for around six months. Hand-spun wool was tied with the Persian asymmetric knot and packed against a vertical beam. The gold ground reads as a single warm field because the dye work was unified across the run rather than mixed across multiple lots. Brown floral motifs were drawn in slightly darker shades of the same tonal family rather than in contrasting hues, which gives the carpet its calm rather than its incident. The pile was sheared to ten millimetres after a final wash.

The composition

A warm gold ground with brown floral incident. The drawing is dense without being busy because the colour relationship is held within a single tonal family. There is no central medallion; the field is treated as an even surface, with the border carrying the visual weight that a medallion would otherwise hold. Over the first decade the gold deepens slightly into honey, and the brown work sharpens against it as the surrounding pile compacts.

Persian-tradition carpets at this scale and density, in good condition, trade through the auction houses at twenty to forty thousand dollars when they surface. This is a current weaving in the same lineage, on a hand-built loom, in hand-spun wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the palette and the construction are precisely the qualities the antique trade rewards.

The piece in a room

8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) sits under a six-seat dining table or a moderate sectional. The gold ground reads against pale plaster walls and pairs with brass, walnut, and oxidised copper. Cool grey walls fight the warmth of the gold; warm walls absorb it into the architecture as a considered ground. Avoid heavily patterned upholstery; the rug expects to govern the floor.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so daylight ages the field evenly. Weekly vacuum with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill from outside in with cotton. Wool-trained conservator hand-wash every five to seven years protects the dye and foundation.
