The flatweave is the oldest woven floor covering in the historical record. No pile, no knot, the pattern carried in the weft itself as the weaver moves the colour back and forth across the warp. The structure is honest and the result reads as a drawing rather than a textile. The technique predates the knotted carpet by several centuries and survives unchanged in village workshops across India and the Levant.
The work was carried out in India across four weeks, with two to three weavers at a single horizontal loom. The weft is cotton, the warp cotton, and the comb is brought down hard after each colour pass so the rug holds its drawing without slack. The finished piece is reversible and gains a soft burnish on the surface that is in regular use.
The composition
The composition reads first at a distance: a calm beige and multicoloured field, with the geometry drawn cleanly across it. Closer in, the small irregularities only a hand loom produces. The flatweave gains a soft sheen with use, and the colour stays honest because the dye sits in the wool itself rather than on a printed surface.
On the weaving
A note on the wool: hand-spun yarn carries small variations in thickness and twist that no machine spinning can replicate. Those variations show up in the finished surface as a faint texture across the field, the visual signature of a piece made by hand rather than by a power loom. The colour is yarn-dyed before weaving, locking the pigment into the staple itself.
The piece in a room
A 6' × 9' (183 × 274 cm) format works as a primary bedroom or a six-seat dining table. The beige and multicoloured field gives the room an axis. Walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather sit comfortably on it; the geometry pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the only graphic element holding the floor.
Care
Suction vacuuming once a week. Reverse the rug occasionally to even out light and footfall. Spills should be blotted, not rubbed; a flatweave is essentially a flat textile, and rubbing pushes liquid through the structure. A professional clean every couple of years is usually sufficient. The piece is light to lift and easy to relocate when the room rearranges around it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
