Silk highlighting in a wool field is the oldest luxury convention in oriental weaving, used in the court workshops of Safavid Persia and Mughal India to lift specific drawing elements above the plane of the pile and catch light from a different angle than the wool around them. The Opera design carried in this rug uses gold-toned silk against a wool ground in exactly that tradition, with the silk occupying the central medallion and the corner spandrels while the wool carries the field and border.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly seven months. Around 1.9 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from a long-staple fleece and the silk reeled from the cocoon and twisted before dyeing. The gold tone is a careful blend of weld and weak madder rather than a single yellow bath, which is why the silk reads as warm light rather than as a flat colour. The dye process used vegetable matter throughout.
The composition
A central medallion in gold silk floats above a soft wool ground, with corner spandrels in the same silk echoing the medallion at a quieter scale. The wool field carries vine work in soft madder and faded indigo, with a single deep guard band closing the border. The silk catches the light from one angle and disappears from the other, a behaviour wool cannot reproduce at any price. Over a decade the wool will mellow and the silk will hold its tone.
What you are buying
Silk-highlighted Persian carpets in this scale and density trade at international auction between thirty and seventy thousand dollars when honest examples appear. This is a new weaving in the same court tradition, in the same combined silk-and-wool construction, on the same loom geometry. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is true of no other floor object at this price point.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area where the silk medallion can take direct daylight from a south-facing window. The gold and wool palette pairs with walnut and oak floors, with mid-tone walls, and with brass, leather, and unbleached linen. Place the rug where the silk is read at a slight angle rather than head-on, the way the original court pieces were always intended to be seen.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction alone and the beater bar disengaged. Silk pile is more delicate than wool, so blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and a single drop of water. A silk-and-wool trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. The piece runs ninety years on a domestic floor.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
