The kilim or dhurrie is the elemental floor textile. No knots, no pile, just two yarns crossing over and under each other at the loom. The simplicity is deceptive; the weaver carries the entire colour palette in memory and works the pattern without referring to a written cartoon. This grey wool dhurrie carries a loom-graphic composition that emerges from the slow logic of the loom rather than from a paper cartoon, and reads with the graphic clarity that only a flat weave can deliver.

Production took 3 weeks on a flat loom. Wool yarn was interlocked with a fingertip technique that allows colour blocks to meet at clean diagonals without slits. The wool was hand-spun, dyed in cold water with a vegetable bath, then loaded onto bobbins for the weaver to work into the warp.

The composition

The composition is built from grey blocks pressed together by the weft. Where two colours meet, the slit-weave method leaves a clean diagonal that crisp-edges the pattern in a way pile cannot reproduce. The flat profile means the dhurrie sits low under a coffee table and slides comfortably under a sofa skirt without bunching.

The piece in a room

size as listed () sits well beneath a sofa-and-two-chair grouping or a queen bed with the lower two-thirds of the frame on the wool. The piece organises a room without taking it over. The flat profile suits doorways, kitchen edges, and rooms with sliding furniture, and the grey weave is reversible for double the working life. Care

Vacuum weekly on low suction. Flatweaves shed less than pile rugs but benefit from regular surface cleaning to lift fine grit before it cuts the wool. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth, then a damp one. The dhurrie is reversible, so flip it once a year to spread wear and double the working life. Professional wash every four to five years if heavily used.
