The modern pattern in this rug was developed by a contemporary studio in dialogue with vintage source material. The drawing was iterated for several months in pencil and digital colour proof before going to the loom. What began as a study of antique textiles ended as a composition that suits a present-day living room without quoting the past too literally.

The black composition was mocked up in painted artwork, then translated into a digital pattern file at full resolution before going to the jacquard loom. The studio approved a strike-off sample at full scale before signing off on the production run.

The composition

The black field is laid out so that no single area dominates. The eye travels across the surface rather than landing in one corner. The drawing pairs with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and linen; it tolerates strongly patterned upholstery less well, since the rug is built to be the graphic note in the composition. The fibre

The pile is heat-set polypropylene, with the colour bonded into the strand at the extrusion stage. The rug holds saturation under sunlight, blocks staining at the fibre level, and recovers from compression. There is no pile shedding across the lifetime of the rug.
